CONNECTIONS MATTER IN TODAY’S LEGAL PROFESSION
The strength of the JBA is found in its relationships.

Over the past several months, our legal community has gathered to celebrate lives well lived, mourn unexpected losses and support colleagues through difficult moments.
These experiences have reminded me of something simple but important: Before we are lawyers, judges, paralegals, students or legal professionals, we are people. What happens outside the courtrooms and offices affects us just as much as what happens inside them.
The legal profession asks a great deal from those who serve in it. Recent legal profession surveys cited by The Florida Bar found that 68% of lawyers reported anxiety and 62% reported feeling mentally and physically overwhelmed.
Those numbers put data behind what many already know from experience: This work can be demanding, isolating and deeply personal.
While no Bar association can solve every challenge facing the profession, strong professional communities can make a meaningful difference. They give us mentorship, perspective, friendship and support when we need it most.
As I approach my six-month mark as executive director of the Jacksonville Bar Association, I keep hearing the same message from members and community partners: The strength of the JBA is found in its relationships.
Whether you are a new lawyer, a longtime member, a solo practitioner, part of a large firm, a judge, a paralegal, a student or a community partner, there should be a place for you here.
My hope is that the JBA continues to be a place where you feel welcomed, known and connected.
That work is already underway. We recently welcomed a new board of governors and new Young Lawyers Section board. Together, they are helping create more opportunities for members to engage at every level.
Across the JBA, nearly 50 members have stepped up to lead 30 committees, which means there are more ways than ever to connect, serve, learn and build relationships through shared work.
We are also focused on creating more intentional entry points for new members, solo attorneys, small firms, new lawyers and law students. In the months ahead, you will see onboarding initiatives, leadership development opportunities, civic engagement efforts and introductions designed to help members find their place more quickly and meaningfully.
Wellness will be an important part of this year’s work. From groups to run Jacksonville races together to partnerships with other organizations, we want the JBA to be a trusted source of information, connection and support.
We also want members to know where to turn when they need help, including resources like the Florida Lawyers Helpline, which provides up to five free counseling sessions for attorneys and paralegals facing difficult personal and professional times.
As we prepare to celebrate 130 years of our association, I believe our greatest asset remains the people who make up this legal community. Jacksonville’s legal community has long been built on professionalism, service and relationships.
As we and our city continue to grow, preserving and strengthening those connections matters even more.
I hope you will help us shape this next chapter. Come to a committee meeting. Join us at an event. Introduce yourself to someone new. Share your ideas with us and tell us what would make your membership be more meaningful and useful to you.
The JBA is here to help you expand your reach, strengthen your relationships and find your place in a legal community that cares about one another.
